HEAD OF NEWS - (Based in Ballymena Co Antrim)

Q Radio is currently recruiting for a suitable qualified / experienced individual for the following role based in our Head Office in Ballymena:

The successful applicant will:-

  • Oversee and direct work of the news team
  • Set and drive the news agenda across six separate stations
  • Have editorial control over news output
  • Read radio and web TV news bulletins
  • Manage budgets
  • Be the first point of contact for legal or editorial queries, and ensure that professional journalistic standards are maintained, and that content complies with the law, broadcast regulation and organisational policy

The Head of News must also:-

  • Be able to coach and develop talents in others
  • Be able to give and receive constructive feedback, and manage performance
  • Be able to encourage frank and constructive reviews of news or programme output
  • Have knowledge of the radio market, different station and programme styles, and audience demographics
  • Be able to generate original ideas, and to think creatively about how to communicate them to audiences
  • Understand the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures.

Applicants must be educated to degree level, with at least 5 years experience in an editorial capacity, or, have at least 7 years experience in an editorial capacity. Excellent communication and organisational skills, and a proven ability to manage varied workloads are also essential. A valid driving licence and the use of a car are essential for the post. Applicants must be flexible as they will be expected to travel to all sites throughout Northern Ireland.

NEWS EDITOR - (Based in Ballymena Co Antrim)

The successful applicant will work with the Head of News to direct the work of the news team. They will help drive the news agenda across six separate stations in line with the approach and style of Q Radio, and line manage reporters.

The News Editor will have day-to-day control of news output, identifying stories and selecting and commissioning material for bulletins or programmes and reading radio and web TV news bulletins. They will ensure that professional journalistic standards are maintained, and that content complies with the law, broadcast regulation and organisational policy. 

The News Editor will:-

  • understand and have an instinct for what makes a good news story
  • exercise sound editorial judgement
  • have excellent writing skills, with the ability to tailor and adapt content for different audiences and platforms
  • be able to generate original ideas, and to think creatively about how to communicate them to audiences
  • be able to work calmly and effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • have excellent communication skills
  • know, or be able to learn, how to use a variety of recording equipment and to operate radio studio equipment
  • have strong IT skills
