Coronation Street was last night beaten at the NTAs in the “Best Serial Drama” category, losing out to rivals Eastenders but on accepting the prize Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale, paid a special tribute to actress Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre Barlow in Coronation Street for 43 years.
Anne Kirkbride, passed away on Monday at the age of 60 following a secret battle with cancer.
Woodyatt graciously said: ‘Big thank you to Coronation Street. Without you there would be no Eastenders. Without you and without characters like Ken and Deirdre, we would not be here.’
Referring to her character Deirdre Barlow’s infamous prison stint back in 1998, he said: ‘If you don’t mind, we’d like to accept this for The Weatherfield One’.
Earlier in the ceremony, William Roache brought his Coronation Street co-stars to tears with an emotional tribute to Anne.
He said: ‘With her husky voice and trademark spectacles, the nation took Deirdre to their hearts. As Deirdre and Ken, we were soulmates. And despite what was thrown at us we found one another and always made our way back together.
He finished his touching tribute with “I love you Anne.”
